God Bless America - Cult Laboratories

‘Invigorating, infuriating, razor-sharp, and very funny. I think every single person in the so-called civilised world should see it

An Alternative Saturday Night...

It's Saturday night and this week you're staying in…

But what to watch?

Sure, you could join the rest of the herd and settle for the weekly dose of ritual humiliation and dumbed down culture that is the average big ratings talent show or you could check the freeview channels for some Gypsy Wedding re-runs or maybe that American show where they force obese children to hunt down their own dinner. Perhaps later on they'll be a show where women claw each others eyes out in order to sit on Flava Flav's knee.

No doubt about it, it's going to be a great evening of confirming stereotypes, sniggering at the less fortunate and being visibly moved by the emotional journey of some girl whose singing a Celine Dion song for their dead Dad who 'really, really believed in me so much".

Or…

Take a stand. Spend your hard earned cash on a movie that skewers all the media madness, crass populism and uncaring rudeness of modern life in one handy, heady rush of gun fire, nail-on-the-head rants and well deserved vigilante vengeance.

God Bless America is the perfect antidote to swearing at the TV because generic girl singer A has swung the clap-o-meter further than generic girl singer B in the head-to-head. It's for everyone who ever wondering why Jeremy Kyle… Why? God Bless America is for right thinking people everywhere who feel overwhelmed by the burdensome inanity of their work mates.

Don't sit there living vicariously through the stage managed lives of Vagazzled morons and bright orange fitness instructors/model/actors. Do something good for yourself and watch this movie.

Praise For God Bless America

A round up of the latest UK reviews for God Bless America:

"Frank… aims his gun at morons we’d all like to take down. Implausible? Yes. But not many film-makers would dare to say what this one says, loud and clear."

EVENING STANDARD

"BLACK comedy doesn’t come much blacker than God Bless America, a caustic, bile-ridden satire that will chime with anyone who believes that a beautiful planet is being ruined by the horrible people who live on it."

THE EXPRESS

“With the film excelling in its distressing (and not overly exaggerated) portrayal of the American media, there’s definite enjoyment to be found in the duo’s rampage.”

NME

“…empathy doesn’t extend to right-wing talk show hosts and ‘American Idol’ contestants, all of whom meet a nasty end”

A Rare And Refreshing Thing

Four Stars from THE INDEPENDENT. Check out the rest of the review, it's one of the best…

“This is a rare and refreshing thing, an American film about despair – and funny with it. You'll chuckle darkly rather than laugh out loud. (Now there's a phrase that has been degraded.) But the film's final rant at the world is a wonderful lucid epiphany, and that's where, through Frank, Goldthwait transcends his TV doofus persona to emerge as a trenchant truthsayer – Lenny Bruce by proxy”

“If America really is going to hell, then Bobcat Goldthwait is surely its bitterest chronicler. There has seldom been a movie that hits the nail on the head quite so thoroughly.” - EVENING STANDARD

BOBCAT GOLDTHWAIT - GOD BLESS AMERICA Q&A

Loveless, jobless, possibly terminally ill, Frank has had enough of the downward spiral of America. With nothing left to lose, Frank takes his gun and offs the stupidest, cruelest, and most repellent members of society. He finds an unusual accomplice: 16-year-old Roxy, who shares his sense of rage and disenfranchisement.

GOD BLESS AMERICA is the fourth feature film written and directed by the legendary Bobcat Goldthwait, following on from Shakes the Clown (1991), Sleeping Dogs Lie (2006) and World’s Greatest Dad (2008). Bobcat has directed for many television shows including ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’, ‘Chappelle’s Show’, the ‘Man Show’, and ‘Crank Yankers’. As a comedian, he has had three HBO specials and appeared on the David Letterman show by the time he was 20. As an actor he is best known for his appearances in such 80s classsics as Police Academy 2 and Scrooged.

Joel Murray and Bobcat met in 1985, when they both starred in One Crazy Summer. Joel has also appeared in the films, Scrooged, Long Gone, Shakes the Clown, Cable Guy, Hatch 1 and 2, Lay the Favorite and The Artist. He has been a series regular on many American sitcoms including ‘Grand’, ‘Pacific Station’, ‘Love and War’, ‘Dharma and Greg’, ‘Still Standing’, ‘Shameless’ and as the character Fred Rumsen in ‘Mad Men’.

Special sleeve artwork for the DVD has been created by the graphic artist Jock, best known for his work on 2000 AD, Judge Dredd and The Losers.

GOD BLESS AMERICA will receive its European Premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival on Friday 29 July. Bobcat Goldthwait will be attending.
